Bleu Garten OKC

So Midtown is one of my favorite districts in OKC! The restaurants and businesses are thriving down there, and one of the best things about it is Bleu Garten, an outside area that features different food trucks and delicious adult beverages!

Tonight was a summer kickoff party introducing the new cocktail menu! I ordered a fruity, tequila-based drink called the Midtown Sunset! I highly recommend it! Ben got a beer, as usual! They had the Filipino Fusion food truck tonight, which is one of my favorites. I had already eaten, but the dessert was insane! The Halo Halo, a Filipino variation on the classic shaved ice, featured boba-type stuff at the bottom, ice cream, and a random piece of flan on top! Yes, you read that right! FLAN!!

I was so excited, I forgot to take a picture until this point! Oops!!

Besides the delicious offerings, I love that Bleu Garten has stuff to do! There was a live band to listen to, cornhole games, and GIANT JENGA!!

Here we are with some friends playing! Photo cred: Brianna Dodd! It was super fun! I always like food/drink places that have activities!

Bottom line: If you live in OKC or are planning a visit soon, go to Bleu Garten! It’s the perfect summer hangout! Bonus: You can bring the dog! We would, but our sweet Sheltie suffers from anxiety around crowds! Kids are also welcome before a certain time! Our toddler godson was there for a while!

Hope you had a fun Thursday like we did! Let me know if you love Bleu Garten, or drop a different OKC recommendation in the comments!

Hump Day!

Hey y’all! It’s hump day! Wednesdays are kind of bittersweet to me. At the end of the day, we are officially over the hump and on the downward slope to the weekend. Getting through the day, however, can be a ride on the struggle bus.

I feel like Mondays, though sometimes dreary, are a powerful reset button. It’s a chance to start the week off right and crush it! Since summer started, I have been working on the goals that I put on the back burner during the end of the busy school year, such as quiet time with God, exercise, housework, and this blog, among other things I will announce later. ๐Ÿ˜‰ This Monday was awesome! I did my devotional and Bible study first thing in the morning, went to kickboxing, grocery shopped for the week, started my weekly cleaning project, cooked a delicious dinner, went to Barre 3 with my friends, and did some professional development reading. Tuesday was a similar day, but with a full day of professional development. Today, however, was more of a struggle. It was hard to wake up early for devotional time before my day of professional development. I was tempted to watch TV instead of pushing through cardio dance and then order in instead of cooking the healthy meal I planned. I had to use one of my mom’s favorite phrases to push through:

Being an adult is doing what you don’t want to do when you don’t want to do it.

I listened to my mom’s voice, which frequently finds its way into my head, and I did it all anyway.

Does my story sound familiar to anyone? Does your Monday motivation turn “meh” about midweek? If so, you are not alone! It’s normal to hit the “hump slump,” but it’s not okay to stay there! Your responsibilities don’t end because you’re tired, and self-improvement can’t happen if you grow stagnant after a couple of days. You need consistency to be successful, which means doing the things you know you need to do even when you don’t feel like it.

At this point, you may be thinking that I’m a total slavedriver and that you deserve a rest. If that’s you right now, you’re correct! You DO deserve a rest! As for the other part…hehe, no comment! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m not saying to just push through constantly and never give yourself a reward or a breather! We all need to recharge sometimes. The difference is that you recharge and then get back to work. It’s far too easy to justify laziness to yourself and extend your break to the point of irresponsibility. After I did my professional development sessions today, I met my husband at our favorite coffee shop, had coffee and a delectable croissant, and just chilled for an hour. That was a lovely treat for me, and I felt rejuvenated when it was time to go to the gym!

Here I am with that latte! Yum!! If you haven’t gone to Hank’s in Midtown, check them out! Great coffee with fun and knowledgeable baristas!

Here’s the bottom line: Push through hump day, do what you need to do, but allow yourself a bit of time to recharge when you’re feeling slumpy. I hope y’all had a great Wednesday! You are on the downward slope now, so keep your chins up!

What are your tips for getting through the “hump slump?” Let me know in the comments!

Get To Know You Tag

Hello there!! I was thinking about what to write all day, and then I got tagged for “get to know you!” Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Here is some stuff about me. To all my lovely followers: YOU HAVE BEEN TAGGED!! I want to see yours! ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. ย Are you named after anyone?
Yep! First name: Shelby from Steel Magnolias! Middle name: Elizabeth, a family name. ๐Ÿ™‚
  2. When was the last time you cried?
    Last week.
  3. Do you have kids?
Does this cutie count? 15232073_10211730454515991_1775713306975978767_nThen yes! One 4 year old son named Bounce!
  4. If you were another person, would you be a friend of yourself?
    Absolutely!
  5. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Eh? Sometimes, but it’s not a large part of my personality.
  6. Whatโ€™s the first thing you notice about people?
    Their smiles!
  7. What is your eye color?
    Blue/gray.
  8. Scary movie or happy endings?
HAPPY ENDINGS!! Fairy tales and rom coms are my jam!
  9. Favorite smells?
Pumpkin spice (laugh all you want), fresh cookies, Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua, and apple pie! Wow, lots of desserts…
  10. Whatโ€™s the furthest youโ€™ve ever been from home?
    Europe!
  11. Do you have any special talents?
YES. I can touch my tongue to my nose AND do the belly wave. Not trying to brag, but I can even do both at the same time! #madskillz
  12. Where were you born?
    Sarasota, Florida!
  13. What are your hobbies?
Dancing, eating, shopping, reading, blogging (duh), fashion, and anything dealing with coffee.
  14. Do you have any pets?
    See my kids answer! ๐Ÿ˜‰
  15. Do you have any siblings?
Yep! 3 brothers and a sister, plus the in-laws! Only one is my actual sibling by birth. The rest were cousins who became siblings when we were adopted by our aunt and uncle!
  16. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Oh gosh, I am already grown up! After my PhD, I want to stay in education, but either go the administration track or the professor and eventually dean track. I know God will lead me in the right direction when I finish that doctorate! #drrose
  17. How tall are you?
Not tall enough to reach my top cabinets! 5’3!
  18. How many countries have you visited?
4: Mexico, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg
  19. What was your favorite/worst subject in High School?
My favorite was English, and my worst was science.
  20. What is your Favorite drink? Animal? Perfume?
My favorite drink is definitely a Starbucks latte! I like to vary the flavors! My favorite animal is a sweet, cuddly dog! My favorite perfume is Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua, with Polo’s #1 (the blue one) coming in a close second!
  21. What would you (or have you) name your children?
My first son will be Killian James Rose, possibly spelled Cillian, the traditional Irish way. And we may do Benjamin as the middle name instead, because it’s tradition on his side to give the first born son the father’s first name as their middle name. But we like James too! We’re still debating those things! My first daughter will be Annabelle Elizabeth Rose. All the women on my mom’s side have Elizabeth as the middle name! Then my second son will be William Benjamin Rose or William James Rose. Whichever one we don’t do for Killian! That’s all we have so far!
  22. What Sports do you play/Have you played?
I ran track in high school, but besides that, my sport has always been dance! I started dancing at age 4, and now I run the dance team at our middle school!
  23. Who are some of your favorite YouTubers?
I am not really a YouTube person as of right now, but there are bloggers who vlog that I follow. Carly the Prepster, formerly The College Prepster, is my absolute favorite! She has stayed true to herself and her brand for years, and we love a lot of the same things! Our hometowns are also like 45 minutes apart! Another one I like is TT Bret, a cosplayer with tons of Harry Potter stuff! #nerdalert
  24. Favorite memory from childhood?
Definitely all of the cool opportunities that dance provided me. One takes the cake, though. When I was 10, our ballet company put on a ballet dealing with Iran. They invited the Shahbanou of Iran to come and watch it. I knew nothing about Iran, but 10 year old me felt entitled to meet royalty, because I was, like, totally going to be a royal one day. Duh. So meeting her was a really cool part of my childhood! She was super sweet!
  25. How would you describe your fashion sense?
It’s preppy for sure, especially during spring and summer when I can wear my array of polos and Lilly dresses! I also have a super vintage flair, though! I like to add some ’50s sparkle to my outfits! It’s fabulous, yet modest!
  26. What phone do you have? (iOS v Android?)
    iPhone 7!
  27. Tell us one of your bad habits!
I accidentally adopt other people’s speech patterns when I talk to them, and I have to be careful that it doesn’t seem like I’m making fun of anyone! It’s funny, because if I live in a new place long enough, their accent starts to come out! When I lived in Washington state for 3 years, I first got teased for sounding too southern, but when I got to Oklahoma, they straight up thought I was a northerner because I had started saying “bayg” instead of bag! I got rid of it pretty quick after being back where I belong, in the good ol’ south! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks for reading and getting to know me better! Don’t forget to do yours!! Y’all have a great Friday night!

The Bravery to Fail

Happy new year, everyone! I hope you had a safe and fun New Years Eve! I know I did! We had two fun parties to attend, and I was definitely the most dressed up! (As always!)

The dress is Lilly and the shoes are Kate Spade, but the accessories are all vintage hand-me-downs from Mom!

As we celebrated, I thought about what my theme for the new year will be! I already selected some things I wanted to do this year, but I love the idea of having a focus all year.

While I am a pretty bold person already, there is always this underlying perfectionism and self-doubt. I was the kid who cried over a B+ in school. I feel that while I am successful in life, I can do so much more if I am brave enough to fail. Putting myself out of my comfort zone means that I may stumble before I rise to the top. However, that is the only way to grow. 2018 will be a year of growth for me as I push myself and rise to the next-level version of me! Stay tuned for some awesome things!

What is your theme for the new year? Let me know!!

18 in ’18

So, everyone does these lists of things they want to do by a certain time, right? Sometimes it is okay to jump on the bandwagon! The new year is a day away, and I have been thinking about the goals I want to accomplish and just some fun things I’ve wanted to say yes to for a while. We celebrated my dad’s life and mourned his death in Washington this week, and it was a reminder that life is too short for us to ever hold back. So, without further ado, here are 18 things I want to do in 2018!

1. Write my first book (with my mom!)

2. Apply and get in to a PhD program

3. Choreograph my first school musical

4. Travel somewhere I’ve never been

5. Present at an academic conference

6. Send more thank you notes

7. Cosplay at a convention

8. Write in my Passion Planner all year

9. Cook something from my Harry Potter cookbook

10. Use Groupon when we don’t know where to go for our date

11. Try at least one no-spend weekend

12. Improve my Spanish

13. Go on a romantic getaway with the Hubby

14. Go to at least 3 restaurants on my Chowdown Countdown list

15. Maintain a regular exercise schedule

16. Learn a new skill

17. Attend a formal event

18. Host a tea at Inspirations Tea Room

Some of these are little pleasures in life, while others are milestones. Y’all should always follow your goals and dreams, no matter how ridiculous they may seem to others (like my obsession with food tours of America and tea parties). I am excited to complete this list, starting as soon as tomorrow! Here’s to going out with a bang tonight and starting fresh tomorrow for a brand new year! You never know when life will end, so you might as well live it on your terms and do what you know you are capable of! I am excited to share more about the things I cross off the list!

This is my excited face! ๐Ÿ˜›

Comment and let me know what you want to accomplish in 2018!

See you next year! ๐Ÿ˜‰

A Weekend in the Country

(Name that musical!)

Last week was all fun in the city, but the weekend was pure country!

City

I love living right outside of a capital city, and my coworkers and I made the most of that last Thursday! It was the science teacher’s birthday, and teachers got half off at the Melting Pot in September!! We had a great time, and the food was delicious! It is so nice to truly get along with my colleagues! We had the most ridiculous conversations the entire time! So much fun!

I got my favorite cocktail of theirs! It’s called the Yin Yang Martini, and it’s pure chocolate heaven!
Here we are rocking out Bricktown!! I’m wearing a skirt and jacket set from Express!! This outfit has never failed to earn me compliments!
Country

Over the weekend, we traded the usual fun in the city for some time in Beggs with the in-laws. They just moved from the suburbs to an adorable country house and we got to see it! It was the best sleep ever because it was so quiet! There was no wifi, so we just relaxed and read! Such a nice change from the usual! One of the best parts was the tiny hamburger stand we visited both days! It looked like something from a ’50s movie! The food was delicious, and the shakes were the real deal! None of that powder crap!

I went with a simple white button down and jeans! I still didn’t fit in! Maybe it was the Sperrys and the Kate Spade? ๐Ÿ˜‚

Though we are suburbanites who frequent the city, we equally appreciate a good weekend in the country! It was just what we needed to recharge?

Where do you prefer? City or country?

Until next time!

Welcome to Glitter and Grades!

Hello, y’all! Welcome to my first blog post! I am starting this blog as a bit of a fresh start. I tried blogging on another domain, but I didn’t really take it anywhere, and it grew stagnant. I guess I wrongly believed that nobody really wanted to hear what I had to say. My confidence has grown since then, both as a writer and a person. My husband has always believed in my blogging capabilities, and he loves it when I write, as do I. So, here I am!

Glitter and Grades is a blog about the lifestyle of a teacher, graduate student, wife, and dog mommy. Do not expect all of my posts to be lesson plans or teacher tips, because I like to write about my ENTIRE life, even the one my students don’t see every day. There will be teacher goodies, grad school hacks, recipes, fashion posts, beauty tips, and restaurant reviews, just to name a few. I am blessed to live a diverse and eclectic life, and this blog will reflect that. “They” say to stick with a more streamlined topic for a successful blog, but that is just not who I am! #ENFPprobs

So thank you for taking the time to read my introductory post! I hope to meet many other awesome bloggers through this experience, and to learn a little more about life. I am not giving up this time, so this is a just a glimpse of what y’all will see on this website! I’m so excited to get started and to meet you!
